Imagine having to work with large numbers such as one million or 10 billion and constantly having to write down the entire number. It could get tiresome writing all those zeros! And many of us wouldn't be able to verbalize the number even if we could accurately count the endless goose eggs. This became a real problem when scientists started calculating the distance between planets and stars. So they came up with a way to deal with large numbers – abbreviate them using powers of ten! Every day in the U.S. you are working a system based on the powers of ten. Do you know what it is? It's those pennies, dimes, and dollars you use to exchange one good or service for the symbol (your money) of the goods/services you have provided elsewhere.......
