Stories from the Joplin Peace Garden

On May 22, 2011,  the deadliest tornado to hit the United States since 1947 – the seventh-deadliest single tornado in U.S. history, and 27th-deadliest in World history – carved a 6-mile path through the town of Joplin, Missouri on I-44 just 13 miles from the Oklahoma border.

In mid-June, the national leaders of the School of Metaphysics considered responding to an initiative “to support the goodness behind grassroots community projects” by Tom’s of Maine, a model of responsible business in the healthy products industry.  Tom’s is awarding a total of $150,000 to six 501(c)3 organizations around the country.  SOM qualifies and is in need of funds for building its much-needed headquarters building.

Yet, when these people met, they did not ask for money to build for themselves.  They quietly determined to ask for funds to help turn their neighbors’ misfortune into a blessing.  They submitted a proposal to build the Joplin Peace Garden, a place to express gratitude and to honor the courage of the citizens of Joplin and the many volunteers whose lives were transformed through their generosity of service.

And so it happened that the people who are building a Healing Wall at the Peace Dome in the heart of the United States, are building a Garden for their neighbors in Joplin.  Here is the record of what such goodness brings–

the hearts healed through new friendships
the minds opened through serving a stranger
the spirits renewed through acts of compassion

– written by the people who are creating this story worthy of telling.

“Peace is achieved by those who fulfill their part of a greater plan.”
