Chapter 3
1 And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These things says he who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your works; you have a name that you are alive, and yet you are dead.
The church in Sardis represents or symbolizes the throat chakra.
The quality of the throat chakra is will.
Will is a series of conscious choices acted upon toward an imaged goal or ideal. Will power is developed as one moves toward the goal or ideal until completion.
He who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars is I AM, for I AM manifests through all seven levels of Mind. The seven spirits are the seven levels of Mind. The one who exercises the will to discipline the mind comes to know the whole Mind and the whole Self as I AM.
Chapter 2, verse 19 of Genesis states, “And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air; and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name.”
The first death was our movement away from Light into the levels of Mind. The second death is entrapment in a physical body.
To call or name something is to identify it. To have a name that you are alive is to have identified the areas of your life and your consciousness that is able to produce learning, growth, and forward motion.
However, verse 1 of Revelation 3 says, “you have a name that you are alive yet you are dead.” To be dead is to be unconscious. The meaning is that outwardly it looks like or appears that you know a lot, are doing a lot and have a lot of motion, but inwardly you are not growing rapidly in consciousness and are somewhat unconscious.
1 After these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lighted by his glory. 2 And he cried with a mighty voice, saying Babylon the great is fallen and has become a habitation of those possessed with devils and shelter of every foul spirit and the shelter of every unclean and detestable bird and the shelter of every unclean and loathsome wild beast.
The angel messenger indicates the disciplined one is awakening to the LIGHT of awareness. This greater awakeness and awareness has enabled the still minded one to identify the unproductiveness of sensory engrossment. When sensory experience loses its allure, its drawing power, its illusion, the illumined one soon knows the truth. The craving for desires only creates pain and misery, and this is exactly what the Buddha said.
Babylon, symbolizing sensory engrossment, leads to falseness of perception. When one identifies the limitation of sensory engrossment the cunning conscious ego becomes easier to identify. The disciplined student disciplines and observes the breath. Now the Self identifies all habitual ways of thinking.
‘Every foul spirit’ indicates the misuse of breath and life force.
‘Loathsome wild beasts’ symbolize one’s unproductive habits.
Wrong perception coming from sensory engrossment leads to wrong thinking.
Wrong thinking is based in temporariness and separateness.
3 Because all nations have drunk of the wine of her wrath and the kings of the earth have committed adultery with her and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the power of her trade.
Nations symbolize the many aspects of Self.
The wine of Babylon’s wrath symbolizes the anger one experiences when one refuses to discipline the conscious mind. When the conscious mind is undisciplined the thoughts are undisciplined due to a weak will. When the conscious thoughts are undisciplined, the emotions are undisciplined. When the emotions are undisciplined one often experiences anger at the self and others.
Accumulating possessions does not give one permanent understandings of Self and creation. The perspective of life changes from the temporary to the permanent and lasting.
