“You trust me, yes?” Babaji knew the answer, and he knew the boy needed to know.

“Yes, “ he answered, eyes steady and calm. “Come.” Babaji led Boy past the serpent toward the core of the tree. It was much deeper and wider than Boy had thought. They seemed to walk for a very long time and Boy was beginning to tire.

The venom had reached the groin and was beginning its journey up the abdomen.

“Here, “ Babaji did not explain. He merely took Boy’s hand and led it into the bark of the tree. Boy’s eyes widened as the trunk of the tree swallowed his forearm. There were no spaces here. It was not an optical illusion or some trick. His hand was actually reaching INTO the tree.

His fingers felt sticky and when Babaji withdrew their hands he could see why. A silky, copper-colored sap had stuck to his fingers. It was thick, like molasses. Boy put his fingers up to his nose. It didn’t seem to have an odor.

“It is the serpent’s kiss,” Babaji said. “It is the beginning of your healing. You must eat it.”

Boy’s nose wrinkled, but he did not hesitate. He knew the wanted to be well. He was surprised because he expected the sap to taste like cod liver oil or some of the herbal teas his parents sometimes gave him. This did not have a taste. It did remind him a bit of mineral oil becase it was thick and seemed to stay on his tongue.

The ante-venom entered into the boy’s body.
